Food Storage & Processing Areas

Air treatment in food facilities must fit the hygiene programme without exposing workers or affecting product quality. Ozone can only be considered within an assessed, unoccupied or contained process with defined release-to-use checks.

The Treatment Challenge

Organic residues, moisture and difficult-to-clean surfaces can sustain contamination and odour. Airborne treatment cannot remove physical soil, and sensitive foods, ingredients and packaging may change when exposed to an oxidant.

How Ozone Helps

Ozone may oxidise selected odour compounds and affect exposed microorganisms under validated conditions. The response depends on the target and exposure; room treatment does not establish food safety or replace cleaning and sanitation verification.

Process engineering

Technical Treatment Approach

The proposed area is isolated before matching feed-gas preparation and ozone generation to a controlled distribution system. Mixing, contact and representative ozone measurements must reflect the room layout. Residual treatment or safe ventilation is followed by measured clearance before access resumes.

Key Benefits

  • May complement a validated hygiene procedure
  • Can target selected odours after source cleaning
  • Supports controlled treatment between authorised operations

System Integration

Cleaning, drainage, hygienic zoning and ventilation retain their own roles. Any ozone stage must be coordinated with food removal or compatibility testing, packaging protection and the facility’s normal sanitation and release procedures.

Engineering & Automation

PLC options can separate preparation, treatment and clearance modes through an HMI. Door interlocks, occupancy controls, ozone sensing and alarms support restricted access, while remote controls remain subject to site authorisation and local shutdown.

Available depending on system configuration and project requirements.

Important Design Considerations

Dose, contact time, distribution efficiency and treatment performance depend on actual air quality, airflow, contaminant load and hygiene goals. Assess food and surface compatibility, secondary pollutants and clearance measurements; no product approval or guaranteed sanitisation is implied.
