Smoke & Persistent Odour Treatment

Persistent smoke odour often remains in deposits and porous materials after the original event. Ozone may be considered by specialists for selected residual odours only after source removal and cleaning, in an unoccupied controlled space.

The Treatment Challenge

Soot, absorbed organic compounds and damaged materials can continue to release pollutants. Treating the surrounding air alone may leave the source intact, and odour reduction does not prove that hazardous residues have been removed.

How Ozone Helps

Ozone can react with some residual odour compounds but may form additional irritants or damage susceptible materials. It does not remove soot particles, repair fire damage or demonstrate that a building is safe to occupy.

Process engineering

Technical Treatment Approach

After remediation assessment, any justified ozone process uses a suitable feed gas and generator with controlled air distribution. Contact and mixing are checked against the actual space, while leakage paths are isolated. Residual ozone and relevant by-products must be managed before measured clearance.

Key Benefits

  • May assist with selected residual odours after cleanup
  • Encourages a defined treatment-and-clearance plan
  • Can be assessed alongside material-specific remediation

System Integration

Physical cleaning, particle capture, ventilation and removal of damaged contents remain primary steps. Adsorption may address some vapours; ozone treatment must be coordinated with restoration decisions and cannot replace assessment of contaminated materials.

Engineering & Automation

PLC and HMI options can manage treatment and clearance cycles where installed equipment is appropriate. Access interlocks, ozone alarms and shutdown controls support exclusion of people and animals; remote operation still requires verified site isolation.

Available depending on system configuration and project requirements.

Important Design Considerations

Dose, contact time, distribution efficiency and performance require actual air-quality, airflow and contaminant-load information plus clear remediation goals. Test material compatibility and secondary emissions, and use suitable measurements rather than smell or elapsed time for re-entry decisions.
