Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater ozonation is usually evaluated as part of a broader effluent-treatment strategy. It may support polishing or disinfection after upstream treatment has reduced the major solids and organic loads.

The Treatment Challenge

Secondary effluent can retain microorganisms, colour and dissolved organics. Suspended solids may shield organisms or consume oxidant, while fluctuating organic loads can make ozone demand difficult to predict.

How Ozone Helps

Ozone wastewater treatment can support disinfection and oxidation of susceptible residual compounds. Reduced colour does not demonstrate complete organic removal, and additional treatment may be necessary for the intended discharge or reuse objective.

Process engineering

Technical Treatment Approach

Conditioned feed gas supplies an ozone generator connected to a mixed contactor or sidestream injection loop. Water flow, residual ozone and process sampling guide operation; ORP may provide a supporting trend rather than direct proof of disinfection. Off-gas requires destruction.

Key Benefits

  • Supports tertiary effluent polishing
  • Can reduce selected residual colour or odour compounds
  • Adds a controllable disinfection stage after solids removal

System Integration

Biological treatment, clarification and filtration commonly address bulk loading before ozonation. Post-biological treatment or activated carbon may manage oxidation products; reuse schemes can also require membranes or UV depending on their objectives.

Engineering & Automation

An effluent-treatment PLC may coordinate feed pumps, ozone output and contactor permissives. HMI trends, residual sensors, ventilation alarms and remote status options support supervision, with shutdown interlocks for unsafe operating conditions.

Available depending on system configuration and project requirements.

Important Design Considerations

Establish ozone dose, contact time, transfer efficiency and treatment performance from actual effluent quality, flow and contaminant load. Test variability, residual toxicity and by-products against the treatment goals; do not infer success from ORP or visual clarity alone.
